Sam
Johnson on Healthcare

I understand that serious health care reform is a top priority of the American people, and as the longest serving Republican on the Health Subcommittee on Ways and Means, I am committed to getting it done.
We must get the right reform, rather than just rush something through that could leave us in far worse shape in the future. Below are key points that I believe are mandatory in reforming our health care system.
- Make quality health care coverage affordable and accessible for every American, regardless of pre-existing health conditions.
- Protect Americans from being forced into a new government-run health care plan that would:
- eliminate the health coverage that more than 100 million Americans currently receive through their job
- limit your choice of doctors and medical treatment options
- result in the federal government taking control of your health care.
- Let Americans who like their health care coverage keep it, and give all Americans the freedom to choose the health plan that best meets their needs.
- Ensure that medical decisions are made by patients and doctors, not government bureaucrats.
- Improve Americans' lives through effective prevention, wellness, and disease management programs, while developing new treatments and cures for life-threatening diseases.
- Allow Americans to buy insurance across state lines.
- Encourage small business health plans (as proposed in a bill I authored, the Small Business Health Fairness Act, H.R. 2607).
- Create new Universal Access Programs that will guarantee access to affordable healthcare for those with pre-existing conditions.
-
Require health insurance companies to eliminate annual and lifetime caps in healthcare policies.
- Extend successful state-based medical liability reforms, like those here in Texas, nationwide.
-
Prohibit federal funds from subsidizing abortions.
